These islands were uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered them in 1456
or 1460. The colonists arrived in 1462. African slaves and Portuguese were
the people who made up Cape Verde's population. The islands did not become
independent until 1975. The country often suffers from drought and famine.
Agriculture and fishing are emphasized.
